2023-04-30: Woke Up Feeling Peaceful

Image
Sunday, April 30, 2023 High: 66.9 Low: 48.2 Light rain in the morning, then partly cloudy Tasks Transplanted some Sweet William flowering plants from the west bank to the orchard. As I'm writing this post I just realized they are biennial plants, which I just learned means that they end their life cycle after two years. So this dividing and transplanting experiment might be moot. Put up some shade cloth on the west side of the greenhouse roof. I cut the original 23' x 16' sheet into a smaller piece that could fit over that section. It was difficult to reach the top center, but I was happy with what I did and am curious to see how it affects the daily high temps. Purchased two more pounds of white clover from Jesse Israel. Also witnessed them selling a blueberry plant for $85 and a hardy wiki for $75. Mixed around the compost bins using the pitchfork. Transplanted the raspberries that were on the south side of the greenhouse into 10G fabric containers. It'll be much easi

2023-04-29: Tomatoes and Peppers

Saturday, April 29, 2023 High: 75.0 Low: 48.7 Mostly sunny Tasks Went to a plant sale in Weaverville that I found from signs on the street. They only had peppers and tomatoes, but I had a nice conversation with the woman there. She recommended connecting with ASAP if I wanted to sell produce or do anything farm/business related. Moved the fig cuttings back to the windowsill Pulled some weeds (Bermuda grass) Harvested all the spinach and cooked it (yum) Planted some bell peppers (unknown because of lazy labeling by yours truly), and determinate tomatoes (Roma and tiny tim) from the plant sale. Two of the tiny Tim's are in the East bed with the edamame, and the others are in the covered raised bed, where the spinach was. Chopped and dropped some comfrey around the pears. The comfrey patch is going nuts, so I gave it a little trim. Trimmed off some of the cold-damaged foliage on the potatoes. I left some as-is, so we'll see what happens. We are supposed to get some lows in the low

Wednesday, April 26, 2023 High: 53.4 Low: 38.8 Rainy Tasks Planted clover on the west side bald spots Pruned off some bad branches (one from Chojuro, one from a plum) Shuffled the figs Ideas: I need to understand the temperature of the two beds that have Agribon on them. They might be suitable places to hold figs when the temperature is < 50 degrees. I noticed the Alleghany Pawpaw had significantly less cold damage than any other variety, which aligns with what I read about. Grateful for the rain lately as it'll help the clover spread Pruned off a diseased branch from the Chojuro Asian pear and an aphid-infested branch of a plum tree. I put these branches in the garbage bin. Yay Yay My precious :((((((( Asparagus finally poking his head out Planted white clover on the bald spots on the west side Covered the seeds with some old grass clippings "June Prelude" raspberries coming in early
