2023-03-13: Bricks and Dirt

Monday, March 13, 2023

High: 59.2
Low: 33.7
Partly Cloudy

Observations:
  • Nurseries that I follow on Instagram have posted a frost warning for tonight. It's supposed to get down to about 25. There was some hail or snow falling in the early evening
  • More and more dandelion flowers appearing
  • There was some cold stress on the Desert King fig. The leaves were curled.
Tasks
  • Stopped by that dirt pile I noticed on the way into town. Turns out it is some good stuff! Dark compost, and some brown soil. I filled up all three 20G fabric containers that I had in the car. It appears to be unmonitored but there was a car that stopped near me for a while, and then the passenger looked at me. Maybe I'm paranoid. It looks abandoned and uncared for, though.
  • Responded to an ad for some free bricks in Weaverville. Did not disappoint. I got a bunch of them but didn't want to get too many in order to avoid scraping the chassis. I might try to get some more tomorrow if there are any left. I plan to fill in the gaps around the greenhouse perimeter and also use them to build small garden beds.
  • Watered the beds
  • Put some Agribon on the flowering trees. It's messy, but it's better than nothing. This is an attempt at frost protection.
  • Spent about 10 minutes trying to clean up part of the bank, until my hands went numb, then I called it a day.
Tomorrow
  • Unload bricks from the car and place them near the greenhouse
  • Try to get more bricks
