Wednesday, March 29, 2023 High: 59.5 Low: 33.2 Sunny Observations Tomato seedlings made their appearance today Connection established from pea tentacle to trellis Buds on one of the grapes Tasks Got 8 bags full of compost from Weaverville Planted three trees on the top of the bank in the front yard: Matsumoto, Autumn Brilliance, and Hana Fuyu Planted an Autumn Brilliance outside of the front gate, in between the two chestnut trees Watered the beds Received and planted three pawpaws from Edible Landscapes in the front yard: Overleese, Sunflower, and Alleghany Met with Sugar Hollow Solar to get a quote Ideas Heading to Nashville tomorrow, going to water the greenhouse figs and seedling tray, and write down the daily tasks for Hayley before I go

2023-03-28: And Now It's Here

Tuesday, March 28, 2023 High: 59.5 Low: 46.4 Cloudy, slight drizzle Observations Goumi berry flowers smell divine Pear flowers smell like fish Leafing out on the raspberries, even the newly planted ones Tasks Moved the fig cuttings that were in the greenhouse to the crawl space. Put leaf compost on the orchard plants. Still need to do this for the plants in the front yard. Connected the "indoor" sensor, which is now in the greenhouse Ideas Reconsidering my investment in figs. I think I want to get rid of a lot of them and focus on ~10 varieties to plant in the ground. I can protect 10 trees each year, but I don't want to do much more than that. Maybe 10 in-ground and 10 in containers. I don't know. I'm at that phase where I have a bunch of young plants. Maybe I just keep them in the crawl space until the last frost is over. The greenhouse is great for getting a head start, but if they get a head start then temperatures drop down to the 40s, that head start actuall

Monday, March 27, 2023 High: 76.0 Low: 55.0 Mostly sunny Observations Root on the Dr. Gowaty figpop Took a nice slow walk around the orchard this morning and get up close and personal with some plants. Trying to understand their lifecycle better. Tasks Put some leaf mulch on a few of the orchard plants. It was the end of the day and I was tired so I quit early. Watered the beds, asparagus, and peas. Cut off the dead leaves on the plants in the greenhouse using scissors. I figured that there is no way they could come back to life, so why not just cut them off and send any energy elsewhere. Ideas Saw this video on a solution for mosquitos. I will try it out this year. There are some plants in the front yard that I want to replace with some of the extra persimmon, pawpaw and/or serviceberries. I'll do this on Wednesday. Violette de Bordeaux fig Chicago Hardy fig Empty holes (2) TODO: Prepare the three holes for the pawpaws that should arrive on Wednesday TODO: Get more composted soil

Sunday, March 26, 2023 High: 82.2 Low: 45.8 Mostly Sunny Observations More and more leafing out Tasks Moved the potato containers onto the tarp Gathered a bunch of trash Cleaned up the porch Seed-bombed the area where the raised beds used to  be with clover and flowers (and I also stuck in some extra veggie seedlings) Moved the bricks to the perimeter of the greenhouse Had a fire and burned a bunch of brush Watered the beds Up-potted three figs: Violet Solleil, Rosso di Trani, and Paradiso Bronze Put the bricks back that was outlining the raised bed garden area Recorded a video touring the yard. Haven't seen the footage yet. Ideas TODO: Get more composted soil TODO: Put leaf mulch around the trees in the orchard TODO: Get herbs and plant them in the planter on the deck TODO: Use scissors to cut off the dead leaves from all the plants in the greenhouse The end of the cutting is there, and the roots are elsewhere Hayley's onions Curious to see how this looks in 3 months Weeeeeeee

Saturday, March 25, 2023 High: 76.4 Low: 55.7 0.38 inches of rain in the early morning Observations Goumi berries starting to flower. The fragrance is subtle right now, but very nice. Edamame seedlings are starting to sprout! They just needed some warmer soil temperature, that's all Tasks Integrated the weather station with wunderground and weathercloud so I can keep an eye on things if I am not here. I need to figure out how to get the indoor sensor working. It would be good to put that in the greenhouse. The Sensorpush sensors were way off. Planted all of the potatoes. I put 1lb of each kind in a 20g fabric container. I cut some of the larger potatoes into pieces. I used pure compost from Weaverville and Leicester because that is what I had. I also mixed in some slow-release fertilizer (Miracle Grow, organic veggie mix) and a dash of potash. Transplanted the boxwood bush from the fire pit to the shaded area off of the front deck. In the midst of the process, I unearth 25 square p
