2023-04-10: The Best Path

Monday, April 10, 2023

High: 65.1
Low: 31.2
Sunny

Observations:
  • Nero Caesar fig did not like getting transplanted
  • First caterpillar sighting
  • Lots of earthworms were found when clearing the path. They like cardboard and Bermuda grass roots.
  • Forecast looks great (lows above 40)
Tasks
  • Watered the beds, peas, asparagus
  • Applied leaf mulch on top of the potatoes
  • Went to the dirt pile by the thrift and got 7 bags of dirt. It appeared to be decomposed wood chips. I saw a few earthworms in there, so I think it's ok.
  • Started creating the path in the orchard: raked out the path, applied the dirt, and spread some white clover seeds. I ran out of white clover and was going to use some crimson, but they are vastly different. I was lucky to start with white clover because that is going to be a better choice because it grows lower and expands horizontally rather than vertically.
  • Replaced the Santa Rosa plum with the Summer Banana apple tree
  • Took one of the Euclid figs outside (mostly in shade) today to harden it. I plan to put that one in the ground near the honeyberries.
Ideas/TODO:
  • Get more dirt
  • Get more white clover seeds from Reem's Creek
  • Get some straw (from Lowe's, I think) to cover the clover seeds on the path
  • Start taking out the bedroom figs into the shade during the day. Let's get them ready. Tulsi-devi, too!

Not surprised to see such a small root system on the Santa Rosa plum

Ok, so that's how currants are formed
