2023-03-21: No Freezing Lows in the Forecast
Tuesday, March 21, 2023
High: 70.7
Low: 18.3
Sunny
Observations
- Dug down towards the bottom of one of the garlic plants. The bulb area was soft and mushy. I think it's too early
- Signs of root growth on a Victoria figpop. Many of the pops feel dry. I really should add some moisture in there.
Tasks
- Pulled some weeds (buttercup)
- Had an initial conversation with a person from a local solar company
- Moved some of the legacy fence wood over to the in-ground bed's perimeter
- Cleared out some more kudzu from the bank. One small pile at a time.
- Watered the beds and strawberries
- Removed the tarps and started preparing the other covered beds
- Added some leaf compost to the figs and jujube in the comfrey patch
Ideas
- Fellow grower Kevin Quinlan mentioned that figs are susceptible to cold damage at around 45 degrees. Some more so than others. I think he's right. Next year, if I use the greenhouse for a head-start area, I would want to add some type of heat source so we don't get hit like this again.
- When I was working on the bank, I thought it would be cool to have a stairway down to the bottom. I could dig one in and use some stones or wood for the steps. Something simple.
