2023-03-12: An Attempt at Frost Protection

Sunday, March 12, 2023

High: 44.6
Low: 35.5
Cloudy, Rained last night and this morning

Observations:
  • Cold, wet day.
  • The peas continue to grow
Tasks
  • Pruned off some of the dead branches from the grapes and added some leaf mulch. I feel bad for these guys... It's so clayey.
  • Attempted some frost protection on the fruit trees that have flowered (peaches, plums, and nectarines). I used burlap and plastic. It's an experiment. We should be getting lows in the 20s for the next week. I am not protecting any of the in-ground figs at this time.
  • Went to Flat Creek Plant Farm and talked with Ryan. They had some good-looking Apache blackberries, and we talked about Juniper as ground cover
  • Replaced the water filter for the house, then locked myself in the crawlspace.
Tomorrow
  • Ideas for groundcovers:
    • Creeping thyme
    • Speedwell
    • Ajuga
    • Thymus
    • Carex
    • Sedum *
    • Corsican Mint
    • Creeping Jenny *
  • Get soil/compost
Fry

Improved Celeste and Stallion

Don't forget the nectarines
