2023-03-05: Planting and Pruning

High: 85.5
Low: 27.7
Frost in the morning. Sunny all day.

Observations
  • Frost in the morning. It didn't seem to affect the flowering trees much, if at all.
  • Saw a bee pollinating one of the peach trees, and saw some type of fly pollinating (?) a plum
  • The soil is so clay-ey where the grapes and muscadines are. I'm concerned about their longevity.
  • The spinach and chard seeds are starting to pop up. That covered bed, along with the light propagation soil mix, created a good environment for those seedlings, I think.
  • The fig cuttings that were closest to the window had developed some mold. I believe it was because of excess solar exposure causing too much humidity inside the figpop bag.
Tasks
  • Pruned all the fig trees. Did an audio recording of notes while I did it
  • Transplanted the mulberries into tree pots. Interestingly, they don't really have roots, but they have all started developing leaves
  • Planted about 9 raspberries on the south side of the greenhouse, applied mostly compost, with mychrorizzae
  • Planted about 50 strawberries along the fence bed where the grapes are, mostly compost, with mychrorizzae
  • Moved the fig cuttings away from the windowsill to the floor of the office, where these is less solar exposure.
Tomorrow
  • Make the rounds
  • Get some more compost from Weaverville
  • Up-pot the zucchini
  • Water the beds
  • Understand when to harvest garlic (so we can free up that bed in the back)
Strawberry fields forever

I was expecting roots to be there

A small root, I think. Mulberry.

Noticed this wet spot on the two apple trees, but I think it was just from the frost melting.
