2023-02-24: It's Almost March
Friday, February 24, 2023
High: 84.0
Low: 45.1
Cloudy, Light Rain
Observations:
- Peaches and nectarines started flowering -- Flowers come before the leaves... Interesting.
- Water droplets on top of the ends of fig branches. Where does it come from?
- Persimmons and Pawpaws are expensive as heck and Reem's Creek
- All the raspberries look dead.
- Budding on the blueberries, plums, and many many other things.
- A daffodil flower popped up from two of Hayley's bulbs.
- Reem's Creek is currently selling cool veggie crops (kale, lettuce, peas, broccoli)
Tasks:
- Met with John from Blue Collar Landscaping -- Had a great talk about the bank with the kudzu, privet, and honeysuckle. I learned that the big tree is a maple, and it's slowly getting devoured by honeysuckle. I'm getting a few quotes to have him clean up that bank. He mentioned "sheet mulching", which he described as just a bunch of wood chips, the kudzu after the area has been cleared to suffocate it. I like that idea. He also gave some good recommendations for nurseries, chicks, and whatnot.
- Set up the mini-greenhouse frames in the greenhouse
- Went to the Weaverville municipal building and learned how to access the leaf compost. I didn't get any but I will be there on Monday at 8:00am sharp with plenty of bags to fill up the car.
- Pruned the two thornless blackberries. Only took a minute. Easy. Just cut the branches that produced fruit last year, and leave the rest alone.
- Ordered four cubic yards of "Ann's Blended Compost" from Asheville Mulch Yard, to be delivered on March 1st.
Todo:
- Plant peas, onions, and spinach in the beds with the trellis
- Get bamboo in Fairview (from that FBMP posting)
- Re-locate the currants and jostaberry from the front yard to the back
- Plant the jujube and dwarf apple in the ground
- Plant the bushy figs in the ground
- Clean up scrap wood, PVC, etc near the crawl space.
$52 for this pawpaw whip. Yeesh. I need to learn how to germinate. |
Yikes @ these prices. $127 for a Jiro persimmon. |
