2022-12-30: The Chestnuts Are in the Ground

Image
Friday, December 30, 2022 High: 58 Low: 48 Cloudy with a little bit of rain Weed-whacked the front yard, outside the fence, then planted the two chestnut trees about 20' from each other. Sold two of the planted boxes. Added plumber's tape to the faucet pipe. It appears to have fixed the drip.

2022-12-29: Sitting Under Trees

Image
Thursday, December 29, 2022 High: 67 Low: 31 Sunny Tried and failed to put up the other two planter boxes. I think I am going to just surrender the other two. One is plenty. Spent some time outside on this beautiful day, and did some tree observation. Had a fire and burned some of the brush from the clearing, and a big cardboard box. Birch Bark, like paper Oak Sweet gums The fruits of a sycamore The fruits of a sweet gum

2022-12-28: Clearing

Image
Wednesday, December 28, 2022 High: 56 Low: 22 Sunny Cleared the rest of the edge against the deer netting fence. Found some ground cherries back there behind the beauty bush. Most of the fruit was gone already, but I'll try to get them next year. Finished installing the new sink A very ripe ground cherry that tasted like an orange Saw a couple of these nests (?)

2022-12-27: Repair Man Man Man

Image
Tuesday, December 27, 2022 High: 47 Low: 22 Partly Cloudy Home repair day: busted copper pipe from the freeze, and kitchen sink installation (part 1 of ?) The trees and plants look fine. I didn't see any frost damage on the figs in the crawl space. Things have been quiet, it seems. I did  notice some of the paw paw branches seem to have been missing on the two closest to the deer netting fence.

2022-12-26: Back Home

Image
Monday, December 26, 2022 High: 36 Low: 20 Partly Cloudy Made it back to Asheville. Indoor figs, tulsi, and citrus look fine. Water jugs that are on the deck were frozen Too dark/cold to inspect the yard, but I will do that tomorrow.

2022-12-25: Christmas

Image
Sunday, December 25, 2022 High: 31 Low: 12 Partly Cloudy Still in Wilmington. Got a Bonzai tree kit from Emily and walked on the beach

2022-12-24: Christmas Eve

Image
Saturday, December 24, 2022 High: 24 Low: 0 Partly Cloudy I did not get to experience this weather because I was in Wilmington. No garden updates

2022-12-23: On the Road

Image
Friday, December 23, 2022 High: 41 Low: 2 Partly Cloudy Left asheville this morning for Wilmington. It was frigid. Not sure how accurate those numbers are.  Have the figs a gulp before leaving. The zapper and insect sticky traps are effective at gnat control.

2022-12-22: Cold is Coming

Image
Thursday, December 22, 2022 High: 50 Low: 7 Partly Cloudy I didn't do anything directly related to the garden today. I'm sorry for disappointing you. It's going to get very cold. This should be interesting.

2022-12-21: Winter Solstice

Image
Wednesday, December 21, 2022 High: 53 Low: 34 Partly Cloudy Built two more planted boxes for the deck. Still need to attach them, but needed an extra hand. Added wood chips to the Juneberry and plum trees along the back fence. Cleared and weeded part of the back fence area. Purchased 20 circular bricks to add around the base of some of the trees and shrubs in the front.

2022-12-20: Wandering Around the Yard

Image
Tuesday, December 20, 2022 High: 40 Low: 28 Partly Cloudy Thought a lot about where to plant the two chestnut trees, but didn't end up planting them anywhere. Still not sure. Learned about horse nettle ("devil's tomato") -- Seeing a lot of those around the yard

2022-12-19: Peg Board Spontaneous Thought

Image
Monday, December 19, 2022 High: 49 Low: 27 Partly Cloudy Finished the deck planter box Potted most of the remaining fig pops Filmed, edited and published a new video about that procedure

2022-12-18: Carpentry Project

Image
Sunday, December 18, 2022 High: 40 Low: 28 Partly Cloudy Worked on a planter bed for the deck. I wanted to create something like the one that came with the house but modified the plan mid-way to make it level with the edge of the rail. I bought a circular saw, some lumber, and screws. Built and placed one more training spacer and put it on the peach tree (I need to identify and label these! I know there are: Reliance, Cresthaven, ___, ___ ... I'll have to look at the receipts from Reem's Creek) Up-potted the two figs I got from the guy in Canton: Desert King and Col de Dam Grise, and put them in the crawl space (after applying some new soil, wood ash, chips, and water)

2022-12-17: Pruning

Image
Saturday, December 17, 2022 High: 49 Low: 25 Sunny Did some pruning on the trees in the orchard Built a wood thing for training the Ayers pear. Will be creating more of these out of fence post wood and doing some more training, while these trees are young Noticed a lot of dead wood on the fig trees in the crawl space. It still gets very cold there. Sold two Celeste fig pops

2022-12-16: The Beginning of Break
